Heritage, Attractions and Days Out In Basingstoke
Fun and Fascination for all the Family
The award-winning Milestones, Hampshire’s Living History Museum, houses a network of 19th and early 20th century streets and is one of the most popular attractions in the south by volume of visitors.
The history of Basingstoke, from pre-Christian times right up to the present, can be explored at the Willis Museum, located in the Old Town Hall. From its location in the centre of town you can also explore Basingstoke's Town Trail.
Basingstoke Leisure Park
A variety of activities can be enjoyed at Basingstoke’s Leisure Park which is home to the Aquadrome with flumes and a 25 metre competition swimming pool, ice rink, ten pin bowling, ten-screen cinema, bingo hall, indoor bowls, bars and restaurants and the Milestones Museum. The town even boasts its own professional ice hockey team - The Bisons.
A large number of parks and open spaces can be found in the centre of Basingstoke, such as Eastrop Park, recognised for the past 10 years as one of England and Wales’ best green spaces with a Green Flag award.
The River Loddon runs through the park, which also features a boating lake, tree trail and children’s play area, as well as a paddling pool, crazy golf course and wildlife area pond with a resident kingfisher.
The Basingstoke Canal
The Basingstoke Canal Heritage Footpath runs from Festival Place, through Eastrop Park, across Basing Fen and on to Basing House, the ruins of the most magnificent residence in Tudor England which played a key role in the English Civil War.
Year Round Attractions
In addition to year-round activities, Basingstoke benefits from a series of free public events comprising the Transport Festival in May, which features all manner of vintage and classic vehicles from traction engines to motorbikes, a kite festival in June, Basingstoke Live, a music festival held in July, and the spectacular Balloons over Basingstoke event in August (see case study).
The Mayor’s Fireworks Fiesta in November is a ticketed event, the proceeds of which go to selected charities each year. The location for the balloons and fireworks events, the Memorial Park, has recently received the Green Flag award.
